Puerto Rico, day 1

We both really like Puerto Rico.  The houses in the old town are painted in mostly muted pastel colours, just like the Bahamas.  The streets are narrow and really cute, all  traffic is one way, you just have to check which way before stepping out.

We had an early lunch at a nice little restaurant and Kearie decided to get the chicken bits, she was expecting something akin to nuggets or crumbed boits of some kind, she was rather surprised by her meal

The restaurant

The back of my hat, that may or may not make it home.  It keeps trying to blow off

The coke cans, showing the upcoming celebrations, to end the Christmas season.  It will all finalise when we are back in San Juan, after our first cruise, so we will be able to enjoy some of the festivities.

My friend Karen, who I met on a trip to  Europe in 2010, was born and raised in Puerto Rico, though she has since moved to the US,  She gave us some great tips and advice on what to do and see while we are here.  Today we visited the Castilla San Felipe Del Morro, a fort in the old town.  It was incredible.  We catched a video that told us the history of the place and it was facinating.  Everyone wanted the island, and fought over it.  All of them were horrible, the population was enslaved and force into catholicism, which still resounds today.  The Spanish colonised it, using slave labour, the Dutch tried to take it and when they couldn't take the fort, they burnt the town down.  The English did take it, but they all got sick, so they went back home.  They showed the red coats on the video,  and it still amazes me that they put there soldiers in bright red coats while in wars.  They should have just waved a flag saying "We're over here, come get us."  Stupid really...

Where the soldiers slept, looks really comfy

I  liked the bits like this, Kearie posing for me

It was really informative, with plagues like this everywhere,  well worth a visit if you ever come here

We decided to visit a supermarket to get some essentials and on the way there we stopped at a restaurant for an early dinner.  It was a really nice meal, and I was enjoying it, until I felt something land on my head, twice, both sides. I asked Kearie to check to see if something had crapped on my head and sure enough, both sides.  She had to use napkins to clean my head, an asshole pidgeon had decided to bless me, the little $%#%.

The offender, little shit...

Once we had gotten our groceries we came back to our room, past the Abraham Lincoln statue and the school named after him. Not sure why, or what he had doen for the place.

When we got back we discovered we still have no power and a cold shower was had, to wash my hair and the grime of the day off.  We are now  sitting in the dark, hoping we get power back soon.  Kearie lent me her thongs as she thought the shower looked a bit dodgy, and I took them with me and then  forgot to use them, maybe she has a point re the early dementia thing.

When Kearie and I were in Greece in 2012 we had to bye some hand fans about 8am one morning, so when I saw some in a shop in Bendigo a few months ago, I brought us one each, travel ones.  Well, she didn't see it in all her Christmas stuff, so didn't ask me about it.  She gets back to Bendigo, finds it, has no idea what it is and decides to send a picture to her sister, asks her aunts and doesn't want to ask me, in case she "offends me",  So together they decide I have given my adult daughter some kind of frisbee and she gives it away.......  I ask you!!  Sometimes I am sure she walks around all day thinking I am an idiot, or suffering for early demetia, or something.... Like what?  Why not ask the person who gave it to you and not everyone else that you know?  Sometimes I despair of her...

The travel fan, it folds up into the little cover.  I thought it was a great idea and I used mine a lot today, when I was out of the breeze. Hand is for scale

We are still sitting in the dark, so I will go now, tomoorw there are more adventure to be had

Cheers for now
